The brief
I found Ubh by Paudie on Instagram. A young entrepreneur with 38 hens, an honesty box on the side of a cliff in Kilkee. I mean, where else would you get that? I immediately wanted to support him so I did in the only way I know how..making videos. I messaged his instagram page, and his mam and Paudie were interested, so we sorted a date for me to come down and shoot.
The job was to show Paudies character, because the business is secondary. Paudie could be selling mud and he would still be just as popular, because people, show up for Paudie, not the eggs. Even though theyre a delicious addition. Keepingt he balance, I also had to show where they come from, who collects them, and how you, the viewer, can buy them, without the film ever talking down to Paudie or turning him into a novelty.
The film
We spent half a day on location between Paudies house and the Kilkee Cliffs. Paudie was a natural in front of the camera and completly got the point of the video and is very self aware of how he comes across, which only helped make it easier to film.
The video only needed one drone shot at the end, to place the honesty box against that coastline and give it a sense of scale. Two batteries went on it, because the second the drone came out of the case Paudie had questions, and every time I stopped rolling there were more. He flew it himself at the end of the shoot, which was only fair. That’s what the batteries were used on. He was pretty good at flying it too.
He is a genuine, hard-working young fella, and the film is shot to make that obvious in under or around 90 seconds.
He had hatched a few more chicks the week before, so business is booming. I got to hold a chick for the first time ever. It was a great shoot, a great day and I wish Paudie nothing but success with his business. Find him here: @ubhbypaudie on Instagram →
