The brief
Loop Head Together are a community group out on the peninsula. SCEENE is their soil carbon project, funded under the European Innovation Partnership scheme, and this was the first time they were putting it in front of people — farmers, funders, local press, all in the one room.
Launch days only happen once. You can’t ask someone to give their speech again because you were on the wrong lens. There’s no script either, you just get whatever happens between people arriving and the last cup of tea. They wanted something that made a fairly technical soil project make sense to people who don’t work in soil, but it still had to feel like a community day, not a corporate video.
How I shot it
Documentary style, on my own, no lights. I could have brought more gear but people act differently the second you start setting up a rig, and I wanted them relaxed. I covered the speeches wide and tight so I’d have somewhere to cut to.
It was almost entirely indoors, so the rest of my time went on the small stuff around the room — hands, faces, people actually listening. Gives me something to cut away to when a speech runs long, and stops it looking like just people talking.
The edit
I cut it so the project explains itself through the people running it, in their own words on the day, rather than sticking a voiceover over the top. They know it far better than I do.
It went out as their launch film. It’s not tied to the news of that one day, so it still works for anyone coming to the project fresh, which matters more for something that’ll run a few years.
